Focus: Basic Maintenance for Stone Surface
Natural flooring is unique and beautiful but they require more care and attention than its ceramic counterparts.
Sealing with an impregnating sealer should be done on all stone surfaces following installation as they are highly porous. To deepen and darken the stone’s natural colour, some stone products are also sealed with enhancing sealers.
Routine cleaning everyday would only require the use of either pH cleaners or soap-less detergents. It is important to rinse the grout and stone surface thoroughly to remove any remaining cleaning agents. Do note that acidic cleaners are not suitable for alkaline stones such as travertine, marble and sandstone as they will cause erosion, making cleaning and maintenance troublesome and difficult.
To prevent scratches, sand and loose debris have to be swept away gently before any cleaning procedure as these can scratch the surface of your natural stone. Using mats at all points of entrance can help to prevent sand particles and loose debris from entering the home. Also, avoid sharp and pointed object to come in direct contact with your natural stone surface as this will also result in scratches. For stones that are softer, the contact may result in chipping.
Spills should always be removed immediately. However, in the event when the stain has set, removing them can be done with the help of a poultice product. Apply it to the surface of the stain and seal it with a piece of plastic. Allow it to set in accordance to the prescribed time by the manufacturer. Under normal circumstances, the stain will be drawn out of the stone when the plastic and the poultice product are removed. Some stains may require multiple applications or can only be removed partially.
